My Belbin Framework

June 5, 2023 • About Me

The Belbin Team Role theory was developed by Dr. Meredith Belbin in the 1970s through extensive research at Henley Management College. Dr. Belbin discovered that successful teams require a blend of different behavioral types, which he categorised into nine distinct team roles.

My Belbin Framework

Thanks, for sharing:

Each role represents a set of behaviors, strengths, and allowable weaknesses that individuals naturally tend toward when working in groups. The nine Belbin Team Roles are:

Plant – Creative, imaginative, free-thinking. Solves difficult problems with innovative ideas.

Resource Investigator – Enthusiastic, communicative, explores opportunities and develops contacts.

Coordinator – Mature, confident, identifies talent. Clarifies goals and delegates effectively.

Shaper – Challenging, dynamic, thrives under pressure. Has the drive to overcome obstacles.

Monitor Evaluator – Strategic, discerning, sees all options. Makes accurate judgments.

Teamworker – Cooperative, perceptive, diplomatic. Listens and averts friction.

Implementer – Practical, reliable, efficient. Turns ideas into actions and organizes work.

Completer Finisher – Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors and polishes the final product.

Specialist – Single-minded, self-starting, dedicated. Provides knowledge and skills in rare supply.

The resulting profile isn't meant to pigeonhole individuals but rather to provide insight into their natural tendencies, strengths, and potential blind spots when working with others.

My Belbin Profile: Technical Precision with Implementation Focus

According to my Belbin assessment, my top three roles are:

Specialist (62nd percentile)

Strengths: Single-minded, self-starting, dedicated. Provides knowledge and skills in rare supply.

Associated weaknesses: Tends to contribute on a narrow front and can dwell on the technicalities.

Implementer (59th percentile)

Strengths: Practical, reliable, efficient. Turns ideas into actions and organizes work that needs to be done.

Associated weaknesses: Can be a bit inflexible and slow to respond to new possibilities.

Completer Finisher (58th percentile)

Strengths: Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors. Polishes and perfects.

Associated weaknesses: Can be inclined to worry unduly, and reluctant to delegate.

This profile gives insight into how I operate as a Tech VA. My Specialist tendencies mean I bring focused expertise in online marketing and technology, ensuring clients benefit from in-depth knowledge. My Implementer strengths allow me to transform marketing strategies into actionable plans with reliable execution. Meanwhile, my Completer Finisher qualities ensure that delivered work meets high standards with attention to detail and quality control.

With my Specialist-Implementer-Completer Finisher profile, I naturally excel in the technical implementation, execution, and quality assurance phases—ensuring that digital marketing strategies are not only implemented accurately but also delivered with meticulous attention to detail.

The Belbin Team Role model offers a powerful framework for understanding team dynamics and optimizing collaboration. For me, recognizing my strengths as a Specialist, Implementer, and Completer Finisher has helped me provide more targeted value to clients in the online marketing and technology space.

How Belbin Assessment Works

The Belbin framework identifies an individual's team roles through a comprehensive assessment process:

  1. Self-Perception Inventory: Participants complete a questionnaire that measures their behavioral tendencies in team settings.
  2. Observer Assessments: Colleagues provide feedback on the individual's observed behaviors (often more revealing than self-perception).
  3. Combined Analysis: The self-perception and observer data are combined to create a Belbin Team Role profile showing primary, secondary, and less preferred roles.

The resulting profile isn't meant to pigeonhole individuals but rather to provide insight into their natural tendencies, strengths, and potential blind spots when working with others.
